For most patients, no. The composite is sculpted directly onto the tooth, usually with no drilling or injections. The surface is lightly prepared so the composite bonds well, and some people notice mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards.

Bonding is usually completed in a single visit. Most appointments take between 45 minutes and 2 hours depending on how many teeth are treated. You walk out the same day.

If you want whiter teeth, whiten first. Composite is colour-matched to your teeth on the day and cannot be whitened afterwards. We can plan whitening and bonding together at your consultation.

To keep the guarantee valid, attend Smilespark twice a year for examination and hygiene appointments, follow our recommended preventative care, and wear a bite splint or night guard if your dentist advises one for grinding or clenching.

Failure due to underlying tooth fracture, secondary decay, trauma or accidental damage, fracture from inappropriate use such as opening bottles, de-bonding (loosening), or a subsequent need for root canal treatment.

The tooth surface is lightly roughened so the composite can bond, done as conservatively as possible. Some patients experience sensitivity afterwards. Composite can chip, break or loosen, for example from biting hard objects, and no specific lifespan can be promised. An exact colour match to natural teeth is not always possible.

Bonding is matched to your current tooth colour and cannot be whitened later, so any whitening should happen first. Composite bonding is irreversible. If straightening has been recommended and you choose to do it later, the bonding may need to be redone at additional cost. Bonding can discolour over time depending on diet and hygiene.
